I Can Read With My Eyes Shut
Meet the Tutor

Hi, I’m Megan. I have been an English teacher for over ten years. I created Eleven Plus Book Club because of what I see every day – my students are not reading enough. Regular reading leads to success in English and other subjects. It teaches spelling, grammar, punctuation, comprehension techniques creative writing, and critical thinking.
That’s why Eleven Plus Book Club exists. Unlike in other lessons, where we have so much to cover, we can really enjoy talking about what we have read. We have debates, discussions and disagreements. A few months in with several new novels under the students’ belts, I can explain to them differences in style, genre and technique, using examples that I know will make sense to them.
Literature is the best way to teach literary analysis, and that’s the skill you need to succeed in English. Reading sets you up for life with critical thinking skills, opens the door to creative writing, and helps you to explore and create your own path.

How much does it cost to join the book club?
£39 per child per month.
Where does the Book Club take place?
Book club lessons take place online, through Zoom. On registration you will be sent a Zoom link which will be valid for the month’s classes. What types of books are covered in the lessons?
I guide children through a selection of classic children’s literature, mostly from the last century. The books are chosen to challenge, inspire and delight young readers, and expose them to writing styles they are not likely to experience in more modern fiction.
What should my child do if they join the course?
Your child should read the book in their own time. They will have a month to complete each novel. They should also work through the activities in the Resource Pack which can be accessed if you sign up to the course.
What happens in the lessons?
Each lesson will focus on a short extract from the novel of the month. After the class has read the extract, we will use it to discuss the book’s key themes or characters or learn about the author’s technique. These are key skills needed in Entrance Exams. The last lesson of the month will be a discussion or a debate – engaging fun for keeping enthusiasm high!
Will my child’s homework be marked?
The activity sheets include answers, allowing you or your child to check their work independently. We will review some answers as a group in our sessions. If you would like your child to work on reading individually, you are welcome to book tutoring sessions.
